About the Mazda Repu
Only one pickup truck has ever left a factory with a Wankel rotary under the hood, and Mazda built it: the Rotary Engine Pick-Up, or REPU. Sold new in the United States and Canada from 1974 to 1977, it dropped the smooth, high-revving 1.3-liter 13B twin-rotor from the RX-4 into a B-series pickup body, giving it car-like power and an unmistakable rotary snarl no other truck could match. Poor timing against the 1973 oil crisis kept sales low — only around 15,000 were built — which is exactly why survivors are prized curiosities today.
The REPU is unusual for this directory in that it was federalized and sold new in North America, so it needs no 25-year exemption — a US-market REPU is a domestic classic you can already buy and register, and every one is now well over 45 years old regardless.
As the only rotary pickup ever made, clean REPUs are collectible and priced well above contemporary B-series trucks.
