About the Honda Civic Type-r Ek9 Vtec B16b 1.6l
Wind the B16B to its 8,200 rpm redline and you understand why the EK9 Civic Type R still sets the template for a hot hatch. Built from August 1997 to 2000 as a Japan-market model, it took the sixth-generation Civic hatchback and stripped, seam-welded, and hand-ported it into a road-legal track weapon: a 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC four making 185 PS — the highest specific output of any naturally-aspirated engine of its size in its day — plus a close-ratio five-speed, a helical limited-slip diff, and Recaro seats, all in a car under 1,100 kg. It is the purist's Type R, the one enthusiasts measure the later cars against.
The EK9's entire 1997-2000 production run is now more than 25 years old, so every example is fully US-legal to import today.
Genuine, unmodified EK9 Type Rs have become collectible and sit well above ordinary sixth-generation Civics.
